January 2010 President's Letter

Dear Steck Community,

As I sit in my comfortable home at the computer to write this letter, I cannot help but wonder what life is like for the many people of Haiti. The 7.0 earthquake wreaked havoc and destruction on an already struggling country.  As a community, I have seen a great outpouring of ideas and suggestions to help the many citizens of Haiti.  For that, I am grateful that we are in a community that is willing to help our international brothers and sisters.  If you are looking for ways to continue in the recovery efforts in Haiti, Google “Haiti Relief ” and many opportunities are available for continued support.

In our Steck world, we have so much to celebrate!  Second semester is well under way and a lot of fun and educational events are planned.  Mark the date for the annual carnival: “UNDER THE SEA!” which will be Saturday, February 20th.  Remember, our carnival is a HUGE undertaking but the KIDS LOVE IT and look forward to the event every year. The carnival is not a fund raiser; it is a family focused event for everyone to enjoy. That said, in order for the carnival to be successful, we need EVERYONE to help out. Please volunteer for least 1 shift for a game, set up, food service, or clean up. If everyone helps, no one will be overloaded. Watch for volunteer and ticket order forms to arrive via e-mail and backpack mail! If you have questions, please contact Cindy Sondag at 630–898–4704.

Kudos to all of the parents/guardians that volunteered for the Holiday Parties! The parties were a huge success and I heard several excited kids talking about their individual parties!

A big thank you came from our neighbors at Oak Park Elementary school in Aurora.  As part of the Steck winter party, our 5th graders made 71 fl eece hats and scarves and collected additional warm weather gear to keep our Aurora neighborhood children warm this winter!  GREAT JOB to Renee Meier and everyone that made this possible! It takes a lot of effort to make a successful event, and our room parents this year are doing a great job. THANKS to all of you!

Thank you to Mary and Gerry Scalgione and the all of the volunteers for helping at the Pancake breakfast! Jenny Holstead for organizing the Winter Wonderland and Lori Hennessy, Cathy Marzano and Allison Schleining making Season of Sharing a great success!

As always, if you have questions or suggestions for our PTA, please let us know!

Sincerely,
Nancy Vickers
